Coptic teacher “Demiana Abdelnour" A new victim of blasphemycases

The Association for Freedom of Thought and Expression (AFTE) expresses its solidarity with citizen Demiana Abdelnour, who was accused of defamation of religion and whose imprisonment was extended to a further 15 days pending investigation in case no. 810/2013 Luxor/administrative. The association calls upon the prosecution to release her and discard the complaint filed against her in that regard as well as protect her from any threats she may face.

Joint statement: Blogger Ahmed Anwar to be tried for insulting Minister of Interior New evidence of governments hostility towards freedom of expression

The Association for Freedom of Thought and Expression (AFTE) and the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI) condemn the decision to arrest Ahmed Anwar, a video blogger, to be tried in front of Tanta partial court on the 4th of May in case no. 5975/2013 Tanta misdemeanors. Anwar was accused by the prosecution of insulting the minister of interior and deliberate harassment of others using communication techniques.

A Revolution Striving for Human Dignity Must not Deviate from its Objectives: Human rights groups condemn the targeting and assault of individuals based on their identity in the Muqattam events

The undersigned human rights organizations are deeply concerned by reports and testimonies indicating that groups of demonstrators on Friday, 22 March, targeted individuals for the purpose of physically harming them. Citizens were targeted during clashes at various sites in Muqattam, and several vehicles were stopped and their passengers assaulted based on the belief that they were affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood, due to their outward appearance or because the car bore license plates from outside Cairo.

AFTE appeals banning "YouTube" in front of high administrative court

Today AFTE submitted judicial appeal no 10464 for the year 59 of the court order issued on the 9th of February 2013 by the administrative court in claim no. 60693/66 J which stated the block of the execution of the negative decree banning the administrative body concerned from undertaking the necessary measures to block youtube for a month, as well as banning and blocking all websites and links that have shown sections, under various pretexts, of the video defaming the prophet.

AFTE commentary regarding the new law governing demonstrations The law is a new addition to the series of restrictive legislations

AFTE released today its commendatory regarding the draft law organizing demonstrations in public places. The law was submitted by the government to the Shura Council where it is being currently discussed. As soon as the draft was publicly published it was highly criticized in view of the restrictions it imposes on the right to demonstration and its violation of all principles of freedom of expression and right to peaceful gathering, in addition to its violation of the minimum standards required by any legislation organizing exercise of rights and freedoms in a democratic country.

Association for Freedom of Thought and Expression Holds public prosecutor responsible for withholding information regarding detainees during events of the second anniversary of the revolution

Further to the ongoing lack of transparency, conflicting statements and vagueness of Egyptian state institutions towards the public, the public prosecutor decided to close the file regarding AFTE's request submitted on the 30th of January 2013, in its capacity as an Egyptian human rights organization concerned with the right of the public to information. The request stated that the public prosecution should publish daily information regarding the numbers of people arrested during the events that began on the 25th of January until now, their charges, places of detention and any other information needed to ensure their safety and the legality of procedures taken against them, in accordance with principles of disclosure and transparency and to facilitate the role of their defense lawyers, as stated in article 78 of the constitution, which states that "the right to defense is granted".

In swift application of new Constitution: Reuters photojournalist prosecuted by before military tribunal

The undersigned Egyptian human rights organizations strongly condemn the arrest of photojournalist Mohamed Sabry and his referral to an expedited military trial after he was detained while preparing a story for Reuters in the Rafah area in northern Sinai. We demand that Sabry be released immediately and that the Military Prosecution drop the charges of being present in a military zone without permission and taking photographs.
